IPL 2022: Chennai Super Kings have had a tough start into this season of the Indian Premier League. They haven’t been able to convert the momentum after the last season’s heroics.
Chennai Super Kings went on to beat Kolkata Knight Riders to mark their fourth IPL trophy. It was a spectacular performance from the yellow army after what was a largely unsuccessful season in 2020.
Even then too Chennai Super Kings could not produce anything magical or spectacular. The IPL 2020 season was still ripe till the end for Chennai Super Kings with little to no charismatic performance.
They finished at the second last position in that season after back to back disappointing performances. Everyone perceived that Chennai Super Kings were done and dusted for good.
However, what happened in the next season was quite a life lesson and motivational lesson for everyone. Chennai Super Kings put on a daunting performance throughout the season.
They went on to start their season quite well in the first phase. However, the question was if they would still pull it off in the second phase. Chennai Super Kings were unstoppable in their pursuit last season.
Not only did they overturn the tables and the odds in their favour but they also proved everyone against writing themselves off the next time. CSK then went on to become the second most successful IPL team with four trophies in their kitty.
As a result of the spectacular win, Chennai Super Kings’ stocks skyrocketed. And the brand CSK became the first sports conglomerate in India to become a unicorn.
The previous year for the Chennai Super Kings brand was quite fantastic and historic as well. But the same cannot be said for this year. Chennai Super Kings did not start strongly in the IPL 2022. The mega auction did not turn quite well for Chennai Super Kings.
Rather than creating something new and fresh, CSK management went ahead with the same approach. They brought back nearly half of their players from the previous seasons. CSK also went out of its way to bring back Deepak Chahar.
The Rajasthan state player became the most expensive player in CSK’s kitty in the mega auction. Chennai Super Kings management got a lot of things wrong in the mega auction. It was a collective failure from the management and leadership group.
Now the result is quite evident on the field as Chennai Super Kings have had one of the worst starts to a particular season in the Indian Premier League. Chennai Super Kings first lost to Kolkata Knight Riders.
It was a one-sided loss that continued further in the then-upcoming matches. Chennai Super Kings went on to lose their fourth consecutive game on Saturday. This was another disappointing performance from Chennai Super Kings.
They were said to bat first in the day match and all they could do was put another bizarre performance with the bat. It was a catastrophic display from the batting lineup again. But this time against a more depleted side like Sunrisers Hyderabad.
Chennai Super Kings put up only 154 runs in the first innings despite the pitch aiding the batting. Only Moeen Ali was able to put up some performance with the bat.
A team like Sunrisers Hyderabad who has struggled for many seasons went on to drub Chennai Super Kings. It was a beating that went on to shake the self-belief of Chennai Super Kings.
The CSK team lost the IPL 2022 match to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets. Sunrisers Hyderabad chased the total with 14 balls remaining. Abhishek Sharma was awarded the man of the match award.
Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Flemming said, “Probably each facet [of the game] is a concern, if not at one stage then altogether. We were well outplayed today. We’re sort of learning.
We’ve got some issues around player availability, and in some areas a little bit underpowered. So that we’re just looking for players to step up. So we’ve got some learning to do still around our players and our squad.
And we haven’t had any evidence that sort of helps the belief. We are not winning any games. Not being close to winning any games, you get a bit of self-doubt, and the players get a little bit niggly. So we just got to work through that pretty quickly and try to find some rhythm and get back in the tournament.”
A lot of things have gotten out of favour for Chennai Super Kings. Deepak Chahar has been a key powerplay bowler for Chennai Super Kings. His ability to give early breakthroughs was a huge boon. But his absence is showing a lot of vacuum in the inexperienced bowling side of Chennai Super Kings.
According to many reports, Deepak Chahar will be available for Chennai Super Kings from the last week of April. The date is still far away but CSK’s flaws don’t majorly deal with Deepak Chahar’s unavailability.
Last season’s orange cap winner Ruturaj Gaikwad is nowhere near the quality and form he used to be in the last season. There are no runs from the top order. And on top of that, CSK does not have an out and out quick scorer.
The bowling of Chennai Super Kings is the most fragile it has been since the inception of the Indian Premier League. They have inexperienced and ineffective bowlers who barely have the required quality or skillset.
Players like Adam Milne are still out due to injury. In no time does Chennai Super Kings’ bowling looks threatening. The wickets are not coming and leaking runs through big overs has become a norm these days.
In all likelihood, there is no chance that Chennai Super Kings will be able to make a comeback into the IPL 2022 season. The 10 team format makes it more difficult than ever for Chennai Super Kings.
They are likely going to finish in the bottom part of the points table this season. And perhaps the management should look into themselves and take responsibility for the mess that they have created.
